Joseph L. and Virginia Fortuna founded Fortuna Funeral Home on Fleet Avenue in the heart of Cleveland's Slavic Village in April 1958. They quickly established a personal relationship with the community as they sought to provide others with compassion, comfort, and understanding in their time of need. In 1977 Mary Ann Fortuna-Trzaska and her husband James joined the family business with Mary Ann becoming a licensed funeral director and James becoming a licensed funeral director and embalmer. Joseph and Virginia's son John became a licensed funeral director in 1979, and joined his parents, sister, and brother-in-law in the day to day operation of Fortuna Funeral Home. After nearly fifty years of serving the Northeast Ohio community from their original Fleet Avenue location, Fortuna Funeral Home opened their second location conveniently located at 7076 Brecksville Road in Independence, Ohio. We met recently with Mary Ann, James, and John, and listened as they provided this overview of the services Fortuna Funeral Home offers;

Fortuna Funeral Home is a full-service, family-owned and operated funeral home. Our services range from traditional funerals to memorial services, cremations, and funeral pre-planning. We carry a wide range of caskets suitable for all tastes and budgets, in addition to vaults, urns, keepsakes, and cremation jewelry designed to hold the ashes of a loved one. As a family business, we serve you as we would like to be served; with sincerity, with care, and with compassion.

We are on call twenty-four hours a day and always answer the telephone in person. We strive to be available at whatever hour of the day or night we are needed, and will often meet with families at the hospital or nursing home. We handle all of the arrangements ourselves, and do our best to lighten each family's burden in their hour of need.

Since our early days on Fleet Avenue, my mother has always provided homemade bakery items, coffee, and tea during wake hours. We also offer brunches after the funerals that can include a wide selection of hot and cold foods. We work closely with local catering companies, and specialty ethnic foods are always available upon request.

When we built our funeral home in Independence, our goal was to offer more services in a conveniently located, modern facility while still maintaining the home-like feel on which we have built our reputation. Many of those we have served throughout the years have moved to the suburbs, and our new Independence location places us closer to their new homes. We have ample parking and our arrangement office, viewing parlors, selection room, and luncheon room facility are totally handicapped accessible. We also have a clergy office for families to privately meet with their pastor during visitation when necessary.

John's son, Joseph, is now attending classes at Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Hopefully, he will be starting his apprenticeship with us as an embalmer and funeral director later next year. John's wife, daughters, nieces, and nephews also lend a hand as needed and help to preserve the fifty year tradition of our family helping yours.
