Peggy Farrell-Kidd has been in love with dogs her entire life. The members of her personal pack have ranged in size from a Toy Poodle to a Saint Bernard, and Peggy has spent her life studying how people and their dogs can interact and work together. With a BS degree in Animal Science from Purdue University and an MBA from Loyala University, she is passionate about obedience training, competition, canine behavior modification, and is especially fond of taking her Border Collies herding. In February 2009 Peggy and her husband Bruce are opening Central Bark® Doggy Day Care in Broadview Heights, OH to provide a fun place for dogs when their parents' busy lives cause them to be away from their beloved four-legged companions during the day. We visited with Peggy recently, and listened as she provided this overview of the goods times available at Central Bark® Doggy Day Care;
Central Bark® Doggy Day Care provides dogs with a fun, friendly, action-packed alternative to spending lonely days at home. We offer doggy day care, doggy sleepovers, parties, puppy training, grooming services, and a boutique specializing in canine products and gifts for the discriminating dog-loving shopper. All of our staff members love their own dogs with a passion, and promise to love your dogs every bit as much as you do.
We provide a set routine in our doggy day care that your pet will find both relaxing and reassuring. Dogs can be dropped off early in the morning and are first taken to individual crates in our nap room. At eight o'clock they are divided into play groups based on their size and temperament, and then play with their friends until noon in either our outdoor or indoor play area depending on the weather. At twelve o'clock they return to the nap room where they will enjoy a snack that their parents have brought or one that we provide. The lights are dimmed, soft music is put on, and the dogs will sleep and enjoy a bit of quiet time. At two o'clock they rejoin their friends and play until 4:30 when they are brought back to the nap room to calm down in preparation for being picked up by their parents.
Our play groups have a handler present at all times. Dogs entering our play areas undergo a behavioral and need to be current on their DHLPP, Rabies, and Bordatella vaccinations. Each day when they arrive at Central Bark® Doggy Day Care, a handler will perform a cursory examination to ensure that every dog is free of fleas and in good health.
We provide sleepovers as a better alternative to boarding and these services are provided exclusively for our regular day care clients. Overnights include all of our normal day care services in addition to special personal attention from our staff. Sleepovers are simply slumber parties with all of your dog's friends in familiar surroundings, eliminating the separation anxieties and other concerns associated with a traditional kennel setting.
Everybody loves to party and dogs are no exception. We host doggy birthday parties, bark-mitzvahs, and parties to celebrate all types of occasions. Parties include treat bags, party hats, and Frosty Paw™ treats for all the dogs and a bandanna for the birthday dog. We can order a birthday cake from a local doggy bakery, refreshments for the human participants, and decorations in the theme of your dog's party. We also host New Years Eve parties for the dogs that allow their parents to sleep in the following morning!
Training sessions include Puppy Training and Socialization for puppies 8-14 weeks of age and Puppy Manners and Temperament Building for puppies 15 weeks of age and older. Puppy training and socialization classes will teach you how to teach your puppy life lessons while exposing them to many experience that will positively impact their temperament for years to come. For example, we provide pseudo veterinary exams to prepare puppies for real visits to their vet. We look at their teeth, eyes, and ears, and give them gentle pinches on the back to simulate the giving of a shot. Throughout the exam we provide encouragement, praise, and treats so that when they are actually in their own vet's examining room they will be calm, relaxed, and just waiting for their treat. Puppy manners and temperament building teaches them how to sit, down, stay, and come, and how to use these skills in everyday life. This class provides exercise, structure and socialization which solidifies housebreaking, improves behavior and makes for a happier puppy and parent.
We have a daily price for our doggy day care, in addition to a discount for buying a ten punch card. We also sell VIP passes which are pre-paid packs for the entire month that include a free bath, a free Barkley Buff, and a discount on anything in our boutique.
